E-scooter rider banned from driving for being drunk

The rider of an electric scooter has been banned from driving for 20 months after he was stopped by police and found to be two times over the drink driving limit. Mohamed Shardi, 22, was spotted weaving in and out of traffic dangerously on his e-scooter in south London. When officers pulled him over he admitted drinking two bottles of beer but refused to be breathalysed. But when he was tested at the station he was found to be twice the legal limit to be on the roads. Despite the fact he was not behind the wheel of a car at the time he was still banned from driving or applying for a licence for 20-months and fined £410. Police said the case was a reminder to people that riding e-scooters on public roads was illegal anyway and anyone caught using one while drunk could also lose their full driving licence. Shardi pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, driving with no insurance and criminal damage to a police cell. Sergeant Darren Watson, who arrested Shardi said: “I am pleased with these results. Shardi knew he had been drinking and yet he still got on his scooter and in doing so showed little disregard for the law, his safety and that of other road users. “E-scooters are currently illegal to drive anywhere apart from on private land. Please think about this before you use them on the roads.” Under current legislation, the riding of private e-scooters on the road or in a public place remains illegal although a trial to approve their use in London is expected to begin in the Spring.
