Google Analytics users getting ‘Internal error’ when moving a property – PiunikaWeb

If you own a website then you’re most likely using Google Analytics to keep reports of your website traffic. Analytics is a powerful tool that helps you know your target audience.

It provides information such as real-time views on the website, audience behavior, traffic source, focus keywords, bounce back rate, and more.

In 2020, Google introduced a new version of Analytics upgrading from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4.

Google Analytics 4 can measure, unify, and de-duplicate user interaction data, helping the content creators to understand user behavior thoroughly.

You can also move your Analytics property from one account to another anytime you want. That said, some users are now complaining (1, 2, 3) that they are facing an issue when upgrading or moving their property between two Analytics accounts.

Every time they try to move property from one Analytics account to another or upgrade to the new version, it keeps showing an error that says ‘internal error please try again later’.

Here are some reports for reference:

I am using new version of GA in my website which seems not good to me and i want to move this to Old GA Universal account without loosing the property’s data (Users, keywords, reports etc.) of this new account. I tried to create new account and new property (GA Universal) but when i move property to this new account, it says “Internal server error. Please try again later.” (Source)

Anytime I try to move a property between two GA accounts I have full access to, I’m getting an “internal error” message. Not seeing a reason why I shouldn’t be able to move these properties, and the option is provided to me. Any guidance? Is this a bug? (Source)

Even when having full access to the property it does not move. Those affected have also tried workarounds like moving property by disabling ad-blocker or using Incognito mode, which didn’t work.

After getting frustrated with this error, those affected then took to the Google Analytics community forum seeking help.

Meanwhile, a Bronze member of the forum clarified that users can’t convert a UA property to GA 4 or vice versa. And if users want to use Universal Analytics then they have to start from scratch.

Moreover, he said that this issue with moving property to a new account has been reported by many users. And there won’t be a problem when moving old properties between accounts and it’s only affecting the new ones.

Unfortunately, Google has not yet addressed this issue and we hope that the support team acknowledges it sooner than later. We will keep you informed on the further development of this matter.
