The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko said that the unification of banking services with the e-Albania platform will reduce the time and costs for the citizens.

Present at the meeting held with representatives of commercial banks for digitalization of payment services, Sejko stressed that the initiative is in line with the Bank of Albania’s objectives for increasing financial inclusion, access to finance and financial education, in view of the further formalization of the economy.

In his speech, Governor Sejko praised the government’s initiative regarding the digital revolution, which aims at the online transition of public services.

“Since 2018, the Bank of Albania has intensified its efforts to modernize the payment market in Albania, in order to promote financial inclusion and market orientation in more innovative and efficient practices, through the National Strategy for Low Value Payments, 2019-2023,” Sejko said.

Regarding electronic payments, the Governor underlined that significant progress has been made as a result of the measures taken so far by the Bank of Albania and market players, which have contributed to increasing the level of use of electronic payments per capita to 12.5. , from 4.3 that was in 2017.

However, he assessed that many challenges lie ahead for increasing financial inclusion and further development of the market with modern innovations and applications.

Governor Sejko stressed that in order to ensure a complete, fast and low-cost cycle of payments for public services, as well as the reduction of individuals and businesses at the bank counters for these services, there should be a more dynamic communication, in real-time and direct, between commercial banks, e-Albania platform and public institutions.

Further, the Governor called on banks to be as proactive as possible by offering their products, in the context of digitalization, and invited them to be ready to give their contribution not only to shorten the waiting time of citizens at bank counters, but also to reduce the costs of providing these services.

Finally, Governor Sejko added that maximum coordination between institutions remains essential in the framework of regulatory and infrastructural improvements, in order to increase the effectiveness of the measures taken.
