Biometrics companies top award lists for innovation, accessibility and inclusion

A number of organizations from around the world have recognized biometrics providers for their contributions to a number of social issues, including financial inclusion and accessibility. Trulioo, Trust Stamp, Simprints, Trueface and Onfido have all been singled out for their digital identity innovations.

Trulioo recognized by World Economic Forum

The World Economic Forum has recognized Trulioo as a Technology Pioneer for its excellence and innovation in biometric digital identity and online trust to establish financial inclusion, the company announced.

Through digital identity, communities living in poverty could gain access to financial services and become part of a digital ecosystem that can verify 5 billion people and 330 million businesses worldwide.

The community of Technology Pioneers is part of the Global Innovators ecosystem of startups at the World Economic Forum. Trulioo will take part in Forum activities, events and discussions and will work with policymakers and private sector leaders for the following two years.

“We’re excited to welcome Trulioo to our 20th cohort of Technology Pioneers,” says World Economic Forum Head of the Global Innovators Community Susan Nesbitt in a prepared statement. “Trulioo and its fellow pioneers are developing cutting edge technologies all over the world. Beyond their innovations, these firms are contributing greatly to improving the state of the world.”

“We’re committed to promoting digital identity as a force for positive change around the world, by increasing trust and transparency within the digital economy and ensuring all people, particularly the most vulnerable groups in society, can access the basic financial services and support they need,” said Steve Munford, CEO of Trulioo. “Our unique identity verification platform, GlobalGateway, enables organizations to access the world’s largest marketplace of reliable data sources to ensure that every world citizen can have a digital footprint. This means businesses can protect their customers and deliver a seamless and secure digital experience.”

Over the past 20 years, the Tech Pioneers community has promoted startups such as Airbnb, Google, Kickstarter, Mozilla, Palantir Technologies, Spotify, TransferWise, Twitter and Wikimedia. The 2020 cohort is focused on AI, IoT, robotics, blockchain and biotechnology, among others. More than 20 percent of 2020 Tech Pioneers are female led.

Trulioo has also made the 2020 CNBC Disruptor 50 companies’ list, placing 27th. Clear has also been named to CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list. Last year, the biometrics industry was represented by Clear and Yitu Technology.

Trust Stamp awarded by Accenture

Trust Stamp has been awarded the 2020 Top Finance Innovation by Accenture’s Blue Tulip Awards for its innovation that addresses global challenges, the company announced.

To make the final list of 8 breakthrough companies, Trust Stamp was chosen out of 700 competitors, following three live competitions and a six-month program. Trust Stamp was recognized for the Evergreen Hash innovation which leverages a mix of biometric solutions and privacy techniques to ensure accurate authentication without storing or jeopardizing sensitive information. Committed to global financial inclusion and security, the company launched a Public Benefit Corporation, AiiD (Artificial Intelligence for Identity), in The Hague Humanity Hub this year.

“We have made progress towards our mission of accelerating secure societal and financial inclusion by tackling global issues from identity fraud and data breaches to laying the groundwork of trusted identity to elevate hundreds of millions of people in developing areas of the world in partnership with Mastercard,” said Emma Lindley, chief commercial officer of Trust Stamp and managing director of AiiD, in a prepared statement. “Trust Stamp prioritizes inclusion by developing and delivering privacy-enhancing identity technology that eliminates the barrier of entry to financial markets.”

Simprints, Trueface and Onfido recognized by CogX

Simprints has been awarded the “People’s Choice COVID-19 Innovation—Health” award and Trueface has been awarded for “Best Innovation in Computer Vision” by the CogX Awards, while facial recognition researcher Timnit Gebru has been awarded as an “Outstanding Diversity Leader in AI.”

Onfido has been recognized for “Best Innovation in Algorithmic Bias Mitigation” and “Outstanding Leader in Accessibility,” following recent appraisement in the SC Europe Awards 2020 for “Best Use of Machine Learning.”

According to a recent white paper from the company, the existing European identity framework is not all-inclusive and eIDAS is applicable for a small number of use cases. Onfido has enhanced its SDK with features to make accessibility a priority, used Cambridge Simulation Glasses during usability testing, and worked with the Digital Accessibility Centre (DAC) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Onfido has joined the U.K.’s first Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) data protection and privacy sandbox to address algorithmic bias in machine learning models. The company is specifically focusing on racial bias for biometric-based identity verification.

Onfido’s face matching False Acceptance Rate (FAR) is now 0.01 percent, at a False Rejection Rate of 1 percent, the highest ever reported accuracy for comparing faces on identity documents with selfies or videos, the company claims. The company reports 10x overall improvement and a 60x false acceptance improvement for faces of African descent.
